Austin Matthews is a Boston-based composer, songwriter, and performer trained at Berklee College of Music and a member of ASCAP. His work spans orchestral film scoring, jazz composition and orchestration, blues, pop, rock, and electronic production — not as separate categories but as one musician's range.
His command of the piano was shaped early by HuiMin Wang and Edwina Li of the South Shore Conservatory in Hingham and Duxbury, MA, whose mentorship rapidly advanced his fluency at the keyboard, while Vartan Aghababian of Boston University's College of Fine Arts guided his development in composition and arranging.
Austin performs solo — singing and accompanying himself on keyboards or guitar — and as one half of Sax n' Soul, a duet that pairs vocal harmonies with electric and acoustic guitar, piano, and saxophone. He also produces electronic music as NMG, and composes for everything from chamber ensemble to full orchestra. Whatever the format, the work is taken seriously.

- 2016Co-composer and conductor, Berklee Silent Film Orchestra — a new orchestral score for Varieté (E.A. Dupont, 1925), built by a team of composers who each wrote and conducted their own section of the film, performed live to picture. Premiered at the Coolidge Corner Theatre; performed at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. Released on Kino Classics Blu-ray/DVD, 2017. Recipient of a special commendation from the Boston Society of Film Critics.
